Carbon Steel Plain Washer PTFE Coated in Blue

The plain washer, also called flat washer, is primarily stamped from an iron plate and typically shaped as a flat disc with a central hole.

Basic Information About Plain Washers

Plain washers are thin components of various shapes used to reduce friction, prevent leakage, isolate components, prevent loosening, or distribute pressure. These versatile parts are manufactured from different materials and serve multiple functions in various structures.

Threaded fasteners have material and process limitations that prevent large bearing surfaces. Washers help reduce compressive stress on bearing surfaces and protect connected parts. Special washers like spring washers and lock washers prevent loosening of connections.

Plain washers primarily reduce compressive force. When tightening axial force is substantial, washers may deform. This can be addressed by using harder materials or increasing hardness.
